Int’l Friendly: U21s vs. AFC Sudbury U19s

Junior Lone Star FC U21s will make history on Thursday, May 12th when they play their first ever international friendly match against AFC Sudbury U19s from England. The match is scheduled to kickoff at 6:10 PM at Alvernia University.

Founded in 1999, AFC Sudbury is a semi-professional soccer club based in Sudbury, Suffolk, England. Their first team plays in the Ryman Division One North League in the English 7th-tier but they recently gained promotion the National League South (6th-tier) for the 2016-2017 season.

Their U19 Academy Team plays in the Football Conference Youth Alliance League (Division A) while the U18s play in the Thurlow Nunn Youth League where they recently qualified for the Championship Final scheduled for May 19th. AFC Sudbury’s U19/20 team will consist of 21 players who have experience playing in the FA Youth Cup as well as the FA College Cup.

AFC Sudbury U19s arrived in Philadelphia over the weekend and they won their first match 6-0 against Reading Revolutions U19s yesterday. They are also scheduled to play FC Continental U19s today.

Reading United’s Director of Youth Coaching Colin Kent said “We are delighted to be having Danny and the AFC Sudbury Academy team coming over this May. We have organized a number of high level exhibition games for them while they are here and know they are looking forward to showcasing their talents against US opponents…what a fantastic opportunity for the players in this area to experience playing against a high level international team!”

Junior Lone Star FC U21s will also go into Thursday’s match buoyed by their two successive wins in the 2016 Diaspora World Cup where they are representing Liberia. Ironically, they just defeated Team England 1-0 on Sunday. Their other win was against Team African Union on opening day with a 2-1 scoreline.
